Inscription reads;

Sacred to the memory of William the beloved son of John and Hannah Longman of Easington Who departed this life on the 11th of August 1866 aged 23 years. He’s gone our lov’d one yes he’s gone. To range yon deathless shore; He fought the fight through Christ he won. And now his toils are ore. No longer now we here him tell, Of Jesus power to save; Affliction came our dear one snatch’d; Into an early grave.

Parish Register; 1866 Aug 13th William Longman, Easington 23.

The 1861 census return, lists John Longman as Blacksmith, along with his wife Hannah residing at Balk End Easington, with three children William as above aged 17 years also a blacksmith, a daughter Jane Elizabeth aged 15 years, and another son Frederick aged 9 years, a scholar. All born in Easington.
