Inscription reads: Sacred to the memory of John Green Loftus, son of Wm. And Jane Loftus of Hull. Mate of the brig EXPRESS, Captain Roberts. Who fell from the vessel as she was entering the Humber from St.Petersburg, on the 18th of May 1836, and was washed on shore near Kilnsea the 4th of June following and lies interr’d here aged 33 years. Leaving a widow and four children to lament the loss of an affectionate husband and a tender parent. And is he gone whom we so dearly lov’d whose tender kindness we so often prov’d. Yes he is gone, his happy spirits fled. And now he’s numbered with the silent dead.
